The 96th Field Artillery Battalion was constituted on 1 October 1933 in the Regular Army as the 96th Field Artillery. It was activated on 1 June 1941 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During World War II, the battalion participated in several campaigns, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. After the war, the unit was inactivated on 20 November 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. The battalion was later redesignated as the 96th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and assigned to the 3rd Armored Division, reflecting changes in its organizational structure and mission.
