Unit History
The 109th Field Artillery Regiment traces its origins to 1880, when it was organized as the 1st Artillery Regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard. The unit was mustered into federal service during the Spanish-American War in 1898 and later served on the Mexican border in 1916. During World War I, the regiment was redesignated as the 109th Field Artillery and assigned to the 28th Division, participating in major campaigns including Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne 1918. The regiment was again federalized for service in World War II, where it took part in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. In the postwar era, the 109th Field Artillery Regiment has continued to serve as part of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, supporting both state and federal missions.
