The 83rd Field Artillery Battalion was originally constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the 83rd Field Artillery and organized on 10 June 1917 at Camp Stewart, Texas. The unit was assigned to the 8th Division on 17 December 1917. It was demobilized on 7 January 1919 at Camp Fremont, California. The regiment was reconstituted on 1 October 1933 in the Regular Army and later redesignated as the 83rd Field Artillery Battalion on 1 October 1940. During World War II, the battalion served in several campaigns, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
