The 104th Field Artillery Battalion was originally constituted in the National Guard as the 1st Battalion, Field Artillery, New York National Guard, and was organized in 1916. It was redesignated as the 104th Field Artillery and assigned to the 27th Division in 1917. The unit served in France during World War I, participating in several campaigns including the Somme Offensive and Ypres-Lys. After the war, the battalion was demobilized in 1919 but was reorganized in the New York National Guard in 1921. During World War II, the 104th Field Artillery Battalion was again federalized and served with the 27th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater, participating in campaigns such as Makin, Saipan, and Okinawa.
