Unit History

The 5th Infantry Division was first constituted on 24 November 1917 in the Regular Army and organized on 11 December 1917 at Camp Logan, Texas. The division participated in major campaigns during World War I, including the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. After the war, the division was inactivated in 1921. Reactivated on 16 October 1939 at Fort McClellan, Alabama, the 5th Infantry Division served with distinction in World War II, participating in campaigns such as Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The division was inactivated in 1946, reactivated in 1947, and later served in the Cold War era, including deployment to Vietnam from 1968 to 1971.
