The 6th Infantry Division was first constituted on 11 November 1917 in the Regular Army and organized at Camp McClellan, Alabama. The division served in France during World War I, participating in the Meuse-Argonne and Alsace campaigns. After the war, it was inactivated in 1921. Reactivated in 1939 at Fort Lewis, Washington, the division saw extensive combat in the Pacific Theater during World War II, including operations in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Luzon. Following the end of World War II, the division was inactivated in 1949 in Korea. It was later reactivated during the Cold War and served in Alaska until its final inactivation in 1994.
