Unit History

3rd Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard," is one of the oldest active-duty infantry units in the U.S. Army, tracing its lineage to 1784. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to various stateside duties, including training and security missions, rather than overseas combat. It was responsible for guarding critical installations and performing ceremonial functions. The regiment was inactivated on 6 November 1946 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, following the end of the war. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 3rd Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 6 April 1948 at Fort Myer, Virginia. During this era, the regiment became the official ceremonial unit of the U.S. Army, performing duties at Arlington National Cemetery, including military funerals and guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The regiment also provided security in the Washington, D.C. area and participated in national events and ceremonies, solidifying its reputation as "The Old Guard." 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) Throughout the Cold War and Vietnam era, the 3rd Infantry Regiment continued its ceremonial and security missions in the National Capital Region. The unit played a prominent role in state funerals, presidential inaugurations, and other significant national events. While not deployed as a combat unit during this period, the regiment maintained readiness and supported Army traditions and public duties. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 3rd Infantry Regiment remains stationed at Fort Myer and continues its ceremonial mission as the Army’s official escort to the President and as the primary unit responsible for military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The regiment has also provided support for homeland defense and security operations in the Washington, D.C. area, especially following the events of September 11, 2001. "The Old Guard" continues to embody the traditions and heritage of the U.S. Army through its ceremonial and security roles.
