Unit History

The 4th Infantry Division was first constituted on 19 November 1917 in the Regular Army and organized at Camp Greene, North Carolina. The division participated in major campaigns during World War I, including Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne 1918, and Lorraine 1918. After World War I, the division was inactivated in 1921 and later reactivated in 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia. During World War II, the 4th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, 6 June 1944, and played a significant role in the Normandy Campaign, the liberation of Paris, and the Battle of the Bulge. The division continued its advance into Germany, participating in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. Following World War II, the division was inactivated and reactivated several times, serving in Germany during the Cold War and later deploying to Vietnam in 1966, where it participated in numerous operations until 1970. In the post-Vietnam era, the division was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, and later at Fort Hood, Texas. The 4th Infantry Division has also participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in the 21st century. Sources: Wikipedia. (2023). 4th Infantry Division (United States).
