Unit History

5th Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 5th Infantry Regiment, one of the oldest regiments in the U.S. Army, was assigned to the 71st Infantry Division during World War II. The regiment was activated on 15 July 1943 at Camp Carson, Colorado, and trained extensively before deploying to the European Theater. The 5th Infantry participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, advancing through France and Germany as part of the final Allied offensives. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 9 March 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 5th Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 1 August 1946 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and later assigned to various posts during the early Cold War period. During the Korean War, elements of the regiment served in Alaska as part of the U.S. Army’s strategic defense posture, but the regiment did not deploy to Korea as a unit. The regiment continued to serve in training and garrison roles throughout this era. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) During the Cold War, the 5th Infantry Regiment underwent several reorganizations and assignments, including service in Germany as part of the U.S. Army’s forward-deployed forces. The regiment’s battalions participated in NATO exercises and contributed to the defense of Western Europe. In the Vietnam era, elements of the regiment served as training and support units, maintaining readiness for potential deployment. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) In the post-Vietnam era, the 5th Infantry Regiment continued its service as part of the U.S. Army’s active and reserve components. The regiment’s battalions have participated in various operations, including peacekeeping missions and deployments during the Global War on Terror. The 5th Infantry’s lineage and honors are carried forward by active battalions serving in training, operational, and support roles worldwide.
