Unit History

6th Infantry Division 1914–1921 (World War I) The 6th Infantry Division was activated in November 1917 at Camp Forrest, Georgia, as part of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. The division deployed to France in 1918, where it participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and served in the Vosges sector. Following the Armistice, the division returned to the United States and was demobilized in June 1919. 1940–1947 (World War II) Reactivated in 1942 at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas, the 6th Infantry Division trained extensively before deploying to the Pacific Theater. The division saw significant combat in New Guinea, participating in the Battle of Lone Tree Hill and the subsequent campaign to clear Japanese forces from the island. It later took part in the liberation of the Philippines, including operations on Luzon. The division earned campaign participation credit for New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon. After the war, the division performed occupation duties in Korea before being inactivated in January 1949. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 6th Infantry Division was reactivated in 1950 at Fort Ord, California, as part of the Army’s expansion during the Korean War era. However, the division did not deploy to Korea as a unit and primarily served as a training and replacement formation. It was inactivated again in 1956.
