Unit History
9th Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defense)
1940–1947 (World War II)
The 9th Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted in the Regular Army on 27 February 1924 and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort Banks, Massachusetts, as part of the Harbor Defenses of Boston. During World War II, the regiment was responsible for manning coastal artillery batteries and supporting the defense of Boston Harbor against potential enemy naval threats. The regiment underwent several reorganizations during the war, with elements assigned to various harbor defense commands along the New England coast. As the threat to the U.S. coastline diminished, the regiment was gradually reduced in strength and ultimately inactivated on 1 April 1945 at Fort Banks, with its assets and personnel redistributed to other harbor defense units.
