Unit History

6th Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defence) 1940–1947 (World War II) The 6th Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted in the Regular Army on 27 February 1924 and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort Winfield Scott, California, as part of the Harbor Defenses of San Francisco. During World War II, the regiment was responsible for manning coastal artillery batteries and providing harbor defense for the San Francisco Bay area, a critical port and military hub on the U.S. West Coast. The regiment underwent several reorganizations during the war, reflecting the evolving nature of coastal defense as the threat of enemy naval attack diminished. The 6th Coast Artillery Regiment was inactivated on 1 April 1944 as part of the Army’s broader reorganization of harbor defense units, with its personnel and equipment redistributed to other commands.
