Unit History

11th Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defence) 1940–1947 (World War II) The 11th Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted on 27 February 1924 as part of the Regular Army and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort H.G. Wright, New York. The regiment was tasked with the harbor defense of Long Island Sound, operating heavy coastal artillery to protect vital maritime approaches. During World War II, the 11th Coast Artillery was responsible for manning and maintaining coastal gun batteries, searchlights, and fire control systems as part of the Harbor Defenses of Long Island Sound. The regiment underwent several reorganizations and partial activations, with its elements serving at various harbor defense installations. As the threat of enemy naval attack diminished and coastal artillery became less relevant, the regiment was inactivated on 31 October 1944, and its assets were absorbed by other harbor defense units.
