5th Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defence) 1914–1921 (World War I) The 5th Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted on 27 February 1924 in the Regular Army and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort Hamilton, New York. However, its lineage traces back to earlier coast artillery companies and battalions that served in harbor defense roles during World War I. These predecessor units were responsible for manning coastal fortifications and providing harbor defense along the eastern seaboard, particularly in the New York area, to protect against potential enemy naval threats. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) During the interwar years, the 5th Coast Artillery Regiment was a key component of the Harbor Defenses of Southern New York. The regiment operated and maintained heavy coastal artillery batteries, including large-caliber guns and mortars, as part of the Army’s coastal defense system. The unit was responsible for training, readiness, and the modernization of harbor defense tactics and equipment in response to evolving military technology and threats. 1940–1947 (World War II) With the outbreak of World War II, the 5th Coast Artillery Regiment continued its mission of harbor defense, primarily stationed at Fort Hamilton and other installations in the New York area. The regiment was tasked with manning coastal gun batteries, searchlights, and fire control systems to defend against potential enemy naval and air attacks. As the threat of direct attack on the U.S. mainland diminished and coastal artillery became less central to national defense, the regiment underwent several reorganizations. Elements of the regiment were inactivated or redesignated as part of the Army’s transition away from fixed coastal defenses. The 5th Coast Artillery Regiment was officially inactivated on 1 April 1945.
