Unit History

4th Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defense) 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) The 4th Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted on 27 February 1924 as part of the Regular Army and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort Amador, Canal Zone. The regiment was tasked with the harbor defense of the Panama Canal, a critical strategic asset for U.S. military and commercial interests. Throughout the interwar years, the 4th Coast Artillery maintained and operated coastal artillery batteries, providing a deterrent against potential naval threats to the canal. 1940–1947 (World War II) During World War II, the 4th Coast Artillery Regiment continued its mission of defending the Panama Canal, which remained a vital link for Allied shipping and military operations. The regiment manned fixed gun emplacements and searchlights, and was responsible for the operation of minefields and other harbor defenses. The unit did not deploy outside the Canal Zone but played a crucial role in the security of the Western Hemisphere. Following the end of the war, the regiment was inactivated on 15 April 1946 at Fort Amador.
