7th Field Artillery Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 7th Field Artillery Regiment was constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army and organized at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Assigned to the 1st Division, the regiment deployed to France with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. It participated in major campaigns including Montdidier-Noyon, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Lorraine. The regiment earned distinction for its effective artillery support in these operations and was demobilized in 1919 following the end of hostilities. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) The regiment was reconstituted and assigned to the 1st Division, maintaining its readiness through peacetime training and maneuvers. During this period, the 7th Field Artillery Regiment continued to develop its reputation as a key artillery unit within the division. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 7th Field Artillery Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 7th Field Artillery Battalion in 1940. It remained assigned to the 1st Infantry Division and participated in all of the division’s major campaigns during World War II, including the North African landings, the Sicily campaign, the Normandy invasion, and the advance across France and into Germany. The battalion provided critical fire support during the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach and throughout the European campaign. Following the end of the war, the unit was inactivated in Germany in 1946. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 7th Field Artillery Battalion was reactivated in 1948 and continued to serve with the 1st Infantry Division during the early Cold War period. The unit remained stateside and in Germany, focusing on training and readiness during the Korean War era, but did not deploy to Korea as a battalion. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) The battalion continued its service with the 1st Infantry Division, participating in Cold War training and readiness activities. In 1957, the unit was reorganized under the Combat Arms Regimental System, preserving its lineage and honors. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 7th Field Artillery Regiment’s lineage continues through its battalions, which have served in various capacities with the 1st Infantry Division. Elements of the regiment have deployed in support of operations during the Gulf War, the Balkans, and the Global War on Terror, including service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The regiment remains an active and integral part of the U.S. Army’s field artillery forces.
