Unit History

6th Field Artillery Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 6th Field Artillery Regiment was constituted on 8 June 1916 in the Regular Army and organized at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. During World War I, the regiment was assigned to the 1st Expeditionary Division (later the 1st Infantry Division) and deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. The 6th Field Artillery participated in major campaigns including Montdidier-Noyon, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Lorraine. The regiment earned distinction for its effective fire support and was demobilized following the end of hostilities. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) After World War I, the 6th Field Artillery Regiment was reconstituted and continued service as part of the 1st Division. During the interwar years, the regiment participated in peacetime training and maneuvers, maintaining readiness as part of the Army’s core artillery force. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 6th Field Artillery Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 6th Field Artillery Battalion in 1940. Assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, the battalion participated in the North African Campaign, including the landings at Oran, and fought in the Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. The unit provided critical artillery support during the D-Day landings and subsequent operations across Europe. Following the end of World War II, the battalion was inactivated in Germany in 1946. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 6th Field Artillery Battalion was reactivated in 1948 and continued to serve with the 1st Infantry Division during the early Cold War period. The unit remained stateside and in Germany, focusing on training and readiness during the Korean War era, but did not deploy to Korea as a battalion. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) In 1957, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as the 6th Artillery under the Combat Arms Regimental System. Elements of the regiment served in various capacities, including deployments to Vietnam, where they provided artillery support in multiple campaigns. The regiment’s battalions earned campaign participation credit for their service in Southeast Asia. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 6th Field Artillery Regiment’s lineage continues through several active and inactive battalions. Elements of the regiment have participated in operations during the Gulf War and the Global War on Terror, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, providing fire support and contributing to combined arms operations.
