2nd Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defense) 1940–1947 (World War II) The 2nd Coast Artillery Regiment was originally constituted in the Regular Army in 1901 and organized at Fort Totten, New York. By World War II, the regiment was responsible for the harbor defenses of New York, operating heavy coastal artillery to protect against enemy naval threats. During the war, the regiment manned fixed gun batteries and searchlights, providing critical defense for one of the nation’s most important ports. The 2nd Coast Artillery Regiment was inactivated on 1 April 1945 as the threat to the U.S. coastline diminished and the Army restructured its coastal defense forces.
