Unit History
3rd Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defense)
1922–1939 (Interwar Period)
The 3rd Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted in the Regular Army on 27 February 1924 and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort MacArthur, California. The regiment was responsible for the harbor defenses of Los Angeles and San Diego, operating heavy coastal artillery to protect key West Coast ports. Throughout the interwar years, the regiment maintained readiness through training and garrison duties, ensuring the security of vital military and commercial infrastructure along the Pacific coast.
1940–1947 (World War II)
During World War II, the 3rd Coast Artillery Regiment continued its mission of harbor defense, manning coastal batteries and anti-aircraft positions in Southern California. The regiment was reorganized and elements were redesignated as separate battalions in 1944, reflecting the Army’s shift away from regimental structures in coastal artillery. The unit’s personnel contributed to the defense of the continental United States against potential enemy naval and air threats. Following the end of the war, the regiment’s remaining elements were inactivated as the need for large-scale coastal artillery diminished.
