Unit History

32 Tank Company 1940–1947 (World War II) The 32 Tank Company was a unit of the Michigan National Guard, federally recognized in the interwar period and based in Detroit. In 1940, as part of the U.S. Army’s pre-World War II mobilization, the company was inducted into federal service and redesignated as Company D, 192nd Tank Battalion. The 192nd Tank Battalion, including the former 32 Tank Company, was deployed to the Philippines in late 1941. The battalion fought in the defense of Bataan following the Japanese invasion and endured the Bataan Death March after the surrender in April 1942. Many members of the unit became prisoners of war, with a significant number not surviving captivity. The unit was inactivated following the end of World War II.
