Unit History

10th Mountain Division 1940–1947 (World War II) The 10th Mountain Division was constituted as the 10th Light Division (Alpine) on 10 July 1943 and activated at Camp Hale, Colorado, on 15 July 1943. Redesignated as the 10th Mountain Division on 6 November 1944, it was the only U.S. Army division trained specifically for mountain and winter warfare. The division deployed to Italy in late 1944, where it played a pivotal role in breaching the German Gothic Line during the final Allied offensives. The 10th Mountain Division participated in the North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns, earning distinction for its combat effectiveness in rugged terrain. The division was inactivated on 30 November 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 10th Mountain Division was reactivated as a training division at Fort Riley, Kansas, on 1 July 1948. It served primarily as a training and replacement unit during the early Cold War period. The division was inactivated again on 14 June 1958. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 10th Mountain Division was reactivated at Fort Drum, New York, on 13 February 1985 as a light infantry division. Since then, it has become one of the most deployed divisions in the U.S. Army, participating in major operations including Operation Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, and multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq during the Global War on Terror. The division is recognized for its rapid deployment capability and expertise in mountain and cold-weather operations, maintaining a high operational tempo in support of U.S. military objectives worldwide.
