10th Cavalry Regiment 1866–1913 (Indian Wars and Spanish–American War) The 10th Cavalry Regiment was formed on 28 July 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as one of the original six regiments of African American soldiers known as "Buffalo Soldiers." The regiment played a significant role in the Indian Wars, participating in campaigns against the Cheyenne, Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche tribes across the western frontier. The 10th Cavalry also served in the Spanish–American War, most notably at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba, where its actions alongside Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders were widely recognized. The regiment continued to serve in the Philippines during the Philippine–American War and later participated in the Punitive Expedition against Pancho Villa in Mexico. 1914–1921 (World War I) During World War I, the 10th Cavalry remained stationed along the U.S.–Mexico border, performing security and patrol duties. The regiment did not deploy overseas but played a vital role in maintaining border security during a period of heightened tensions. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 10th Cavalry was assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Division and was activated for service during World War II. However, the regiment did not see combat overseas. In 1944, the 2nd Cavalry Division was inactivated, and the 10th Cavalry Regiment was disbanded as the Army moved away from horse-mounted units in favor of mechanized forces. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) The 10th Cavalry Regiment was reactivated in 1958 as part of the Combat Arms Regimental System, with its lineage carried forward by various squadrons and battalions. Elements of the regiment served in Vietnam, where they participated in combat operations and reconnaissance missions, earning campaign participation credit for multiple phases of the conflict. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 10th Cavalry Regiment continues to serve as part of the U.S. Army’s armored and reconnaissance forces. Its battalions have participated in operations during the Gulf War, the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan, maintaining the regiment’s legacy of service and adaptability. The 10th Cavalry remains an enduring symbol of the contributions of African American soldiers to the U.S. Army.
