Unit History

9th Bombardment Group 1940–1947 (World War II) The 9th Bombardment Group was originally constituted as the 9th Group (Observation) in 1922, but it was redesignated as the 9th Bombardment Group in 1935. During World War II, the group was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses and later B-29 Superfortresses. It was assigned to the Twentieth Air Force and deployed to the Pacific Theater, operating from Tinian in the Mariana Islands. The 9th Bombardment Group participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Japan, conducting high-altitude daylight raids and incendiary attacks on Japanese industrial and urban targets. The group earned campaign participation credit for the Air Offensive, Japan, and the Western Pacific. Following the end of hostilities, the group was inactivated on 20 October 1948.
