Unit History

The 11th Bombardment Group was first constituted on 1 October 1927 as the 11th Observation Group and was activated on 1 February 1929. It was redesignated as the 11th Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 1 March 1935. The group was stationed at various locations in the United States before World War II, including Rockwell Field, California, and Hickam Field, Hawaii. During World War II, the 11th Bombardment Group played a significant role in the Pacific Theater. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the group participated in the defense of Hawaii and later conducted long-range bombing missions against Japanese forces in the Central Pacific, including campaigns in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, and the Philippines. The group was equipped primarily with B-17 Flying Fortress and later B-24 Liberator bombers. After the war, the 11th Bombardment Group was inactivated on 20 October 1947. It was later reactivated and redesignated several times, reflecting changes in its mission and aircraft, including service during the early years of the Cold War. Sources: Wikipedia.
