6th Bombardment Group 1940–1947 (World War II) The 6th Bombardment Group was originally constituted as the 3rd Observation Group in 1919 and underwent several redesignations before becoming the 6th Bombardment Group (Heavy) in 1939. During World War II, the group was assigned to the Seventh Air Force and operated primarily in the Pacific Theater. It was stationed in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack and later participated in long-range bombing missions against Japanese forces in the Central Pacific, including operations from bases in the Mariana Islands. The group flew B-29 Superfortresses and contributed to the strategic bombing campaign against Japan, earning campaign participation credit for the Air Offensive, Japan, and the Western Pacific. The 6th Bombardment Group was inactivated on 18 October 1948.
