9th Air Force 1940–1947 (World War II) The 9th Air Force was established as the 9th Air Force on 8 April 1942 and activated on 19 October 1942. Initially organized in the United States, it was soon deployed to the Middle East, where it played a critical role in supporting British and Allied ground forces in North Africa. The 9th Air Force participated in the Western Desert Campaign, providing tactical air support and interdiction missions that contributed to the defeat of Axis forces in the region. In 1943, the headquarters moved to England, where the 9th Air Force became the principal tactical air force for the Allied invasion of Western Europe. During the Normandy landings and subsequent campaigns across France, Belgium, and Germany, the 9th Air Force provided close air support, interdiction, and air superiority missions, significantly aiding the advance of Allied ground forces. Following the end of hostilities in Europe, the 9th Air Force was inactivated in Germany on 2 December 1945. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 9th Air Force was reactivated on 28 March 1946 and assigned to Tactical Air Command. During the early Cold War period, it was responsible for organizing, training, and equipping tactical air units for potential deployment. The 9th Air Force played a key role in the development of tactical air doctrine and readiness during the Korean War era, although its units were not deployed as a headquarters to Korea. The command continued to oversee tactical fighter wings and support units, contributing to the United States’ air defense and rapid deployment capabilities throughout the 1950s.
