Unit History

12th Air Force 1940–1947 (World War II) The 12th Air Force was established on 20 August 1942 and activated on 20 August 1942 at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C. It was quickly deployed to the European Theater of Operations, where it played a pivotal role in the North African Campaign, supporting Operation Torch landings in November 1942. The 12th Air Force provided tactical air support, interdiction, and reconnaissance throughout the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. Its units participated in major operations including the invasions of Sicily and mainland Italy, and the advance northward through the Italian peninsula. The 12th Air Force was inactivated in Italy on 31 August 1945 following the end of hostilities in Europe. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 12th Air Force was reactivated on 17 May 1946 at March Field, California, as part of the postwar reorganization of the U.S. Air Force. During the early Cold War, it was assigned to Tactical Air Command and later to Continental Air Command, focusing on training, air defense, and tactical operations within the United States. The headquarters moved several times during this period, reflecting changes in mission and organizational structure. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) In 1958, the 12th Air Force was assigned to Tactical Air Command and headquartered at Waco, Texas, before moving to Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas, in 1968. Throughout the Cold War and Vietnam era, the 12th Air Force oversaw tactical fighter wings and provided operational control for units deployed to Southeast Asia. It played a significant role in training and readiness for tactical air operations, supporting both U.S. and allied air forces. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) Since the 1980s, the 12th Air Force has continued as a major component of Air Combat Command, responsible for the operational readiness of assigned units in the western United States and Latin America. It has overseen numerous deployments and operations, including support for Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. The 12th Air Force also serves as the air component for U.S. Southern Command, coordinating air operations and security cooperation in Central and South America.
