496th Armored Field Artillery Battalion 1940–1947 (World War II) The 496th Armored Field Artillery Battalion was constituted on 26 June 1944 and activated on 6 July 1944 at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. As part of the U.S. Army’s armored artillery forces, the battalion was equipped to provide mobile fire support for armored divisions. During World War II, the 496th deployed to the European Theater, where it participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. The battalion supported advancing Allied forces with indirect fire, contributing to the success of major operations in Germany. Following the end of hostilities, the 496th Armored Field Artillery Battalion was inactivated on 26 October 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey.
