244 Coast Artillery Regiment Tractor Drawn 1940–1947 (World War II) The 244th Coast Artillery Regiment (Tractor Drawn) was a unit of the United States Army Coast Artillery Corps, organized to provide mobile heavy artillery support for harbor defense. Constituted in 1924 as part of the Organized Reserve, the regiment was activated for federal service on 16 September 1940 at Fort Totten, New York. During World War II, the 244th was responsible for manning and operating tractor-drawn 155mm guns, which were deployed to protect key coastal installations along the Eastern Seaboard. The regiment underwent several reorganizations and redesignations during the war, reflecting the evolving needs of coastal defense. The 244th Coast Artillery Regiment was inactivated on 15 September 1945 following the end of hostilities, as fixed and mobile coastal artillery units were phased out in favor of new air and naval defense strategies.
