Unit History

243rd Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defense) 1940–1947 (World War II) The 243rd Coast Artillery Regiment was a unit of the United States Army Coast Artillery Corps, organized to provide harbor defense for the strategically important Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Constituted in the National Guard in 1924, the regiment was federally recognized and headquartered in Providence. During World War II, the 243rd was mobilized for active duty on 16 September 1940, manning coastal fortifications and operating heavy artillery batteries to protect against potential enemy naval threats. The regiment remained on active service throughout the war, contributing to the defense of the northeastern seaboard. Following the end of hostilities, the 243rd Coast Artillery Regiment was inactivated on 1 January 1946 as part of the postwar drawdown of coastal defense units.
