171st Field Artillery Battalion 1940–1947 (World War II) The 171st Field Artillery Battalion was constituted on 25 February 1943 in the Army of the United States and activated on 1 March 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. The battalion was assigned to the 44th Infantry Division and trained extensively before deploying to the European Theater of Operations. During World War II, the 171st Field Artillery Battalion participated in several key campaigns, including Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The battalion provided critical artillery support during the division’s advance across France and into Germany. Following the end of hostilities, the unit was inactivated on 12 November 1945 at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
