12 Field Artillery Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 12th Field Artillery Regiment was originally constituted in the Regular Army in 1916 and has a distinguished history of service. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division and participated in major campaigns across the European Theater. The unit landed at Omaha Beach in June 1944 and provided critical artillery support during the Normandy Campaign, the breakout from Saint-Lô, and the advance across France. The regiment continued its advance through Belgium and into Germany, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the final push into Central Europe. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated in 1946 as part of the postwar drawdown. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 12th Field Artillery Regiment was reactivated during the early Cold War period and assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. The regiment deployed to Korea, where it provided artillery support during the Korean War, participating in several key campaigns including the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the breakout from the Naktong Bulge, and subsequent operations along the 38th Parallel. The regiment remained in Korea as part of the U.S. commitment to the defense of the peninsula before returning to the United States and undergoing further reorganization.
