1 Medical Battalion 1940–1947 (World War II) The 1st Medical Battalion was constituted on 23 March 1925 in the Regular Army and assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. It was activated on 1 June 1940 at Fort Hamilton, New York. During World War II, the battalion provided medical support to the 1st Infantry Division throughout its campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The battalion played a critical role in treating and evacuating casualties during major operations, including the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach. Following the end of hostilities in Europe, the battalion was inactivated on 20 November 1945 in Germany. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 1st Medical Battalion was reactivated on 17 August 1946 at Fort Riley, Kansas, as part of the 1st Infantry Division. During the early Cold War period, the battalion continued its mission of providing medical support to the division, participating in training exercises and maintaining readiness for potential deployment. The unit remained stationed in the United States during this era.
