Unit History

501st Parachute Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment was constituted on 15 November 1942 and activated on 16 November 1942 at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, the regiment trained extensively in airborne operations before deploying to England in early 1944. The 501st made its combat debut during Operation Overlord, parachuting into Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944, where it played a key role in securing causeways and disrupting German defenses. The regiment later participated in Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, conducting airborne assaults and holding critical bridges and towns. In December 1944, the 501st fought in the Battle of the Bulge, notably defending Bastogne during the German offensive. Following the end of hostilities in Europe, the regiment was inactivated on 20 August 1945 in France. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 1 August 1946 at Fort Benning, Georgia, as part of the 101st Airborne Division. During this period, the regiment remained stateside, focusing on training and readiness as part of the Army’s strategic reserve. The unit was inactivated again on 29 April 1948 at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, and subsequently reactivated on 25 August 1950 at the same location in response to the Korean War mobilization, though it did not deploy as a regimental unit to Korea. The regiment was inactivated on 1 December 1953 at Camp Breckinridge. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) The 501st was redesignated as the 501st Infantry and reorganized under the Combat Arms Regimental System in 1957. Elements of the regiment served with the 101st Airborne Division and later with the 4th Infantry Division. The 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry, deployed to Vietnam in 1967, participating in major operations including the Tet Offensive, the Battle of Hue, and the A Shau Valley campaigns. The battalion earned numerous campaign credits and decorations for its service in Vietnam. Following the war, the 501st Infantry continued to serve as part of the Army’s airborne and air assault forces. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 501st Infantry Regiment remains an active component of the U.S. Army, with battalions assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, based in Alaska. The regiment has deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting airborne assaults, counterinsurgency operations, and security missions. The 501st continues to uphold its legacy as a premier airborne infantry unit.
