Unit History

The 42nd Infantry Regiment was constituted on 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army and organized on 24 June 1917 at Fort Douglas, Utah. The regiment was assigned to the 12th Division on 5 July 1918. Following the end of World War I, the regiment was relieved from the 12th Division and inactivated on 31 January 1919 at Camp Devens, Massachusetts. The 42nd Infantry Regiment was later assigned to the 25th Infantry Division on 1 August 1941 and activated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
