39th Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 39th Infantry Regiment was originally constituted on 15 May 1917 and organized at Camp Syracuse, New York. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division and participated in major campaigns across the European Theater. The 39th Infantry landed in North Africa in November 1942, taking part in the Tunisia Campaign. It later participated in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 and landed in Normandy on D-Day plus four, advancing through France, Belgium, and into Germany. The regiment earned campaign participation credit for Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 20 November 1946 in Germany. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 39th Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Dix, New Jersey, as part of the 9th Infantry Division. During the early Cold War period, the regiment remained stateside, serving primarily in a training and readiness capacity. It did not deploy to Korea as a regimental unit during the Korean War era.
