38th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 38th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army and organized at Syracuse, New York. Assigned to the 3rd Division, the regiment deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. It distinguished itself during the Second Battle of the Marne, earning the nickname “Rock of the Marne” for its steadfast defense against German attacks. The regiment participated in several major campaigns, including Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne 1918, and Lorraine 1918. Following the Armistice, the regiment returned to the United States and was inactivated in 1921. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 38th Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 1 July 1940 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. During World War II, the regiment participated in the Normandy landings and subsequent campaigns across northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The regiment was noted for its actions during the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine. After the end of hostilities, the regiment performed occupation duties in Germany before returning to the United States and being inactivated in 1946. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 38th Infantry Regiment was reactivated in 1947 and later deployed to Korea as part of the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. The regiment fought in several key campaigns, including the UN Defensive, UN Offensive, Chinese Communist Forces Intervention, First UN Counteroffensive, and subsequent operations. The regiment earned multiple unit citations for its actions in Korea. After the armistice, the regiment remained in Korea as part of the U.S. garrison force.
