40th Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 40th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army and organized at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division and participated in the North African and European campaigns. The regiment saw action in major operations including the Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. Following the end of hostilities, the 40th Infantry Regiment was inactivated on 20 November 1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
