The 40th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army and organized on 20 June 1917 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. The regiment was assigned to the 14th Infantry Division on 27 July 1918. Following the end of World War I, the 40th Infantry Regiment was relieved from assignment to the 14th Division and demobilized on 4 February 1919 at Camp Custer, Michigan. The regiment was reconstituted on 18 July 1941 in the Regular Army but was not activated during World War II. The 40th Infantry Regiment has not seen active service since its demobilization in 1919.
