Unit History

4 Composite Group 1940–1947 (World War II) The 4 Composite Group was constituted in the United States Army Air Corps on 30 November 1939 and activated on 20 April 1940 at Nichols Field in the Philippine Islands. As the principal air combat unit in the Philippines prior to the outbreak of World War II, the group was composed of pursuit, bombardment, and observation squadrons, providing a composite capability for air defense and reconnaissance. When hostilities began in December 1941, the 4 Composite Group engaged in defensive operations against Japanese forces, suffering heavy losses during the initial attacks on the Philippines. The group continued to operate under increasingly difficult conditions until it was effectively destroyed during the Japanese conquest of the islands in early 1942. The unit was inactivated on 2 April 1946 following the end of the war.
