Unit History

4th Army 1940–1947 (World War II) The 4th Army was originally constituted in the Organized Reserves as the Fourth Army on 15 August 1932 and activated on 1 October 1933 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California. During World War II, the 4th Army was responsible for the defense of the western United States, overseeing training and preparation of units for overseas deployment. It played a significant role in organizing and training large numbers of troops, but did not deploy as a field army to any overseas theater. The 4th Army remained stateside throughout the war, focusing on continental defense and the mobilization of forces for combat operations abroad. Following the end of World War II, the 4th Army continued its training and administrative functions until the postwar drawdown. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) In the early Cold War period, the 4th Army was headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. It continued its mission of training and readiness, overseeing Army units in the southern and southwestern United States. During the Korean War, the 4th Army was responsible for preparing and processing units and individual replacements for deployment to Korea, maintaining a critical role in the Army’s stateside operations. The 4th Army remained active in this capacity until it was inactivated in 1971. References (AMA) Wikipedia contributors.
