Unit History

The 4th Cavalry Regiment was first constituted on 3 March 1855 in the Regular Army as the 1st Cavalry Regiment and organized on 26 March 1855 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. It was redesignated as the 4th Cavalry Regiment on 3 August 1861. The regiment participated in numerous campaigns during the American Civil War, including operations in the Western Theater. Following the Civil War, the 4th Cavalry was involved in the Indian Wars, serving in the Southwest and on the Great Plains. The regiment later participated in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and the Mexican Expedition. During World War II, the 4th Cavalry served in the European Theater, including the Normandy landings and campaigns across France and Germany. In the postwar era, the regiment has seen service in Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism, continuing its tradition as a reconnaissance and security force within the U.S. Army.
