Unit History

The 2nd Cavalry Regiment was first constituted on 23 May 1836 in the Regular Army as the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons and organized on 30 June 1836 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. The regiment participated in the Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War, where it served in both the Eastern and Western Theaters. In 1861, it was redesignated as the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. The unit continued to serve in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and the Philippine-American War. During World War I, the regiment served as part of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. In World War II, the 2nd Cavalry Group (Mechanized) participated in campaigns in Europe, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
