Unit History

The 5th Cavalry Regiment was constituted on 3 March 1855 in the Regular Army as the 2nd Cavalry and organized on 23 March 1855 at Louisville, Kentucky. It was redesignated as the 5th Cavalry on 3 August 1861. The regiment participated in numerous campaigns during the Civil War, including the Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Appomattox campaigns. Following the Civil War, the 5th Cavalry served in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and the Mexican Expedition. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division and participated in campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including Leyte and Luzon. In the Korean War, the 5th Cavalry fought in several major campaigns.
