Unit History

The 7th Cavalry Regiment was constituted on 28 July 1866 in the Regular Army and organized on 21 September 1866 at Fort Riley, Kansas. The regiment is most famously associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where five of its twelve companies were destroyed. Throughout its history, the 7th Cavalry participated in numerous campaigns during the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, and both World Wars. In the 20th century, the regiment became part of the 1st Cavalry Division and served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and later in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
