The 348th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army and assigned to the 87th Division. It was organized at Camp Pike, Arkansas, and served during World War I as part of the division’s training and replacement system. The regiment did not see combat as a unit during the war and was demobilized on 18 February 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey. The 348th Infantry Regiment was reconstituted in the Organized Reserves on 24 June 1921 and again assigned to the 87th Division.
