348th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 348th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army and assigned to the 87th Division. Organized at Camp Pike, Arkansas, the regiment trained for service in World War I but did not see combat as a unit. The 87th Division, including the 348th Infantry, deployed to France in 1918, where it served primarily as a depot division, providing replacements for front-line units. Following the Armistice, the regiment returned to the United States and was demobilized on 18 February 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) The regiment was reconstituted in the Organized Reserves on 24 June 1921 and assigned again to the 87th Division. During the interwar years, the 348th Infantry Regiment remained a reserve unit, conducting periodic training and maintaining readiness as part of the Army’s reserve structure. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 348th Infantry Regiment was ordered into active military service on 15 December 1942 and reorganized at Camp McCain, Mississippi, as part of the 87th Infantry Division. The regiment deployed to the European Theater, participating in major campaigns including Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace (Battle of the Bulge), and Central Europe. The 348th Infantry played a significant role in the advance across France and into Germany, contributing to the final defeat of Nazi forces. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 21 September 1945 at Fort Benning, Georgia.
