Unit History

The 331st Infantry Regiment was constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army and assigned to the 83rd Division. It was organized at Camp Sherman, Ohio. During World War I, the regiment served as a training and replacement unit, providing personnel for other units deployed to Europe. The regiment was demobilized on 11 February 1919 at Camp Sherman, Ohio. Reconstituted on 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves, the 331st Infantry was again assigned to the 83rd Division (later redesignated as the 83rd Infantry Division). The regiment was ordered into active military service on 15 August 1942 and reorganized at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. During World War II, the 331st Infantry Regiment participated in several campaigns, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
