21 Airship Group 1940–1947 (World War II) The 21 Airship Group was constituted on 1 October 1942 and activated at Richmond Army Air Base, Virginia, as part of the U.S. Army Air Forces’ efforts to expand lighter-than-air operations during World War II. The group was tasked with the organization, training, and operational control of airship squadrons, primarily for anti-submarine patrol and coastal defense missions along the U.S. coastline. The 21 Airship Group played a supporting role in the Army’s lighter-than-air program, which was ultimately overshadowed by the Navy’s more extensive airship operations. The group was inactivated on 31 December 1943 as the Army Air Forces phased out its airship program in favor of other technologies.
