Unit History

20th Fighter Command 1940–1947 (World War II) The 20th Fighter Command was constituted on 4 October 1944 and activated on 27 October 1944. It was assigned to the Twentieth Air Force and headquartered at Kadena Airfield, Okinawa. The command was responsible for directing fighter operations in the Pacific Theater, particularly in support of the strategic bombing campaign against Japan. Its subordinate units included several fighter groups equipped with P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs, which provided escort for B-29 Superfortress bombers and conducted ground attack missions. The 20th Fighter Command played a significant role in the final air operations over Japan, contributing to the weakening of Japanese air defenses and supporting the overall Allied victory in the Pacific. The command was inactivated on 1 December 1945 following the end of hostilities. References (AMA) Wikipedia contributors.
