2 Machine Gun Squadron 1914–1921 (World War I) The 2nd Machine Gun Squadron was constituted during World War I as part of the U.S. Army’s efforts to modernize and expand its combat capabilities. Organized in 1917, the squadron was assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Division. Its primary mission was to provide mobile machine gun support to cavalry operations, reflecting the evolving nature of warfare on the Western Front. The squadron trained and prepared for overseas deployment, but like many similar units, it did not see combat as a complete formation before the end of the war. Following the Armistice, the 2nd Machine Gun Squadron was demobilized as the Army restructured its forces in the postwar period.
