2nd Armored Division 1940–1947 (World War II) The 2nd Armored Division, known as "Hell on Wheels," was activated on 15 July 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia. During World War II, the division trained extensively before deploying to North Africa in 1942, participating in the invasion of Morocco as part of Operation Torch. The division played a significant role in the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, and later in the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6, 1944. It advanced rapidly across France, participated in the breakout from Normandy, and was instrumental in the liberation of Belgium and the crossing of the Rhine into Germany. The division fought in major campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. Following the end of hostilities, the division was stationed in Germany as part of the occupation forces before returning to the United States and being inactivated on 25 March 1946 at Camp Hood, Texas. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 2nd Armored Division was reactivated on 7 March 1951 at Fort Hood, Texas, as part of the Army’s postwar expansion during the early Cold War. The division served as a key armored force in the United States, maintaining readiness for potential deployment to Europe or Korea, though it did not see combat during the Korean War. Throughout this period, the division participated in large-scale training exercises and contributed to the development of armored warfare doctrine. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) During the Cold War, the 2nd Armored Division continued to serve as a major armored formation, with elements periodically deployed to Germany as part of NATO commitments. The division was not deployed to Vietnam as a unit, but many of its soldiers served in Southeast Asia as individual replacements. The division participated in numerous training exercises and remained a central component of the Army’s armored force structure. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 2nd Armored Division remained active through the 1980s, with elements deployed to Germany and participation in REFORGER exercises. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the division’s Tiger Brigade was deployed to Saudi Arabia and played a significant role in the ground campaign, including the Battle of 73 Easting. Following the end of the Cold War, the division was inactivated in stages, with the final inactivation occurring in 1995 at Fort Hood, Texas. The division’s legacy continues through its honors and the lineage of successor units.
